Twenty pawpaw trees in the ground and I have been waiting a long time for this
Twenty pawpaw trees in the ground and I have been waiting a long time for this moment.
Pawpaws are the most underrated fruit tree in North America. Native to Pennsylvania, no serious pest pressure, fruit that tastes like a mango and a banana had a baby in the Appalachian mountains. They want to grow here. We just have to give them a decent start. I planted these in two rows with a lane down the center and I've got chestnuts going in to the east that will eventually throw them some partial shade, which is exactly what pawpaws want when they're young.
They're not built for full blast sun.
The tree tubes needed a little work. I kept them up about an inch so they float off the ground for airflow, cut the rebar stakes in half, and I'm planning to hit one side with white paint to knock back the heat inside the tube. Working with what I've got.
In ten years this lane is going to be something else entirely.
What native fruit trees are you planting this season? ๐
