Twenty five acres of permaculture paradise on this side of the road. Native forage, dust baths under the chestnut saplings, fresh greens, water, shade, the whole spread laid out like a buffet.

Still every so often this rooster decides the other side of the road is calling his name and leads the flock straight across like it's the promised land.

So today I went over there to get some answers. I asked him the question directly. He refuses to comment. Maybe the grass really is always greener. Maybe roosters are just contrarians by nature.

Maybe this is the real lesson buried in every permaculture book, that abundance does not cure wandering.
